Recruiting and keeping talented staff is a must for any entrepreneur. One way to assure you keep staff is to create a company culture in which your staff can thrive and one in which you, as the employer, are satisfied that everything is moving forward at the pace you’ve mapped out.

In our virtual accounting firm we have strategies in place that when we have to hire we are seeking the best talent possible. We have a rigorous screening and testing process and one in which our company culture is shared. We want any potential employee to be as good a fit as possible.

If you’re a new entrepreneur or if you know you want to change your company culture, here are some ways you can make it happen:

  • Have an open door policy. Even if you’re a virtual office – in fact, especially if you’re a virtual office, you want your employees to know they can reach you when necessary. Hint: if they’re well trained and understand your company policies, you will not be bogged down with continual employee contact.Picture3
  • Empower your staff. If you’ve hired correctly you will have staff that can perform at the high level that you’re expecting. Give your employees the ability to carry out their tasks without having to run every task past you or their supervisor first. Let your employees own their job.
  • Don’t forget employee training and development. If you come across a class or course that you feel your staff would benefit from, invest in it on their behalf. Pass along information that you feel would be worthwhile in the business tasks they perform for you.
  • Offer flexibility. Do your employees need to be at their desks from 9-5 every day? Is there any flexibility where they could start earlier or later or even work longer into the evening if they had an appointment or family event to attend during the day? Flexibility is prized by many employees.
  • Take the time to say “thank you – I appreciate you.” A sign of appreciation goes a long way in making your staff feel that you value their contributions. Also, if you have a staff member who has gone above and beyond, shout it out to the rest of the team. Send a group email message in which you laud the employee! Let the entire team know how you show your appreciation.

What do you do or what can you do to make your workplace culture one in which your employees love coming to work? We’d love to know! Please share in the comment section.
