Do You Think to Blink?

So many people sit in front of a computer all day staring at the screen. There are lots of reasons this isn’t good for you, but I’ve recently discovered another one. Your eyes! You blink about half as often when you’re staring at computers or any digital devices. Not only does this strain your eyes, in a dry climate like Arizona not blinking may mean that your eyes aren’t getting the lubrication that they need to function optimally.

Fortunately the solution is not only easy, it’s easy to remember. It’s 20-20-20. Every 20 minutes shift your eyes from the screen to something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. If your office isn’t that big, look out a window or down the hallway. Is there a motivational poster that can go there? It’s just one more way to boost your productivity.

I love to use the porch of our cabin as my office away from the office. Our American flag is 20 feet down the porch, the Aspen and Blue Spruce are 20’ out in the yard, and there’s often someone walking up or down the street to divert my eyes. All in all, it’s a very healthy place for my eyes.
