In many, many ways the world is a very different place in 2009 than it was 20 years ago or even 10 years ago. The work environment has changed and the pace at which we function has accelerated greatly. The internet has revolutionized practically everything in our lives. (My daughter actually laughed out loud when she found out that I still use paper telephone books!)

Our priorities and expectations have changed, too. We are not just workers, we are people. People with families to tend to, hobbies to relax with, spiritual pursuits to enrich us, charities to support with our time and talents, places we want to go and things we want to do. Sometimes these things occur between 9 am and 5 pm. What can be done about that?

Flex time is a great solution! After all, isn’t the goal getting the work done and done well? Does it really matter if it’s done at 9 am or 9 pm? Offering flex time is one of the key features we have used to attract a team of seasoned, experienced accountants who don’t want to have to show up 9 to 5. Besides they don’t have to show up here – they show up virtually.

A few months ago I got a call from Sandi, one of our accounting associates. She was so excited because her daughter Sarah, who is in 5th grade, was going on a field trip to Junior Achievement’s Exchange City. The coolest part was that the first time ever Sandi was getting to go along as a chaperone. Helping with field trips was never an option with her other positions. The job always came before the family. When I’m interviewing prospective team members I always say that at TAO field trips rank right up there with national holidays.
