In recent months, my virtual accounting business has been in another growth phase! This is great news, but it also meant I needed to hire some new virtual accountants to help with this growth. It’s not always an easy – and it certainly is never a quick – task to bring new people on board. There are many items that need to be considered and steps that need to be taken. After all, these individuals will have daily contact with your clients and their behavior reflects on the business’ reputation. You certainly want that reflection to be positive.

How can you make certain you’re getting the “best of the best”? Here are some tips:

  • Ask for referrals from within your network of professional acquaintances.
  • Make certain the person you’re hiring understands and fits into your business culture. Business ethics and character matter!
  • Have the potential new hire take a test on what she might encounter in the job. It’s all well and good for a potential employee to say she knows how to do something but asking her to prove it in a real-world setting it could save you grief in the long run.
  • Ask prospects to send you an email about what they would bring to your team. Watch for clarity of thought, correct spelling, and good grammar.
  • Check their references and preferably talk to her direct supervisor.
  • Introduce the new employee to your existing staff. In our virtual environment that means setting up Skype calls.
  • Provide the employee the tools and training she needs to succeed.
