How to Shop Online Safely?

If you’re like me, you love to get out and meet up with girlfriends for an afternoon of shopping and relaxation, right?! There are times though when you don’t have the time and you have items you need. When those times hit, online shopping is a quick, convenient way to get what you want and need. And it’s nice having packages delivered to your home instead of driving out in the heat!

Here are five ways to keep your information safe when you’re shopping online. (Of course, I am going to pass these along, I’m a virtual accountant!):

  1. Strong passwords are a must, especially if the site you’re shopping on requires you to log in and create an account. Use upper and lower case letters and numbers and symbols (if possible) to keep your information safe and secure.
  2. Make certain your computer antivirus software is up-to-date and that you’re using firewalls and have your home internet connection encrypted.
  3. Go to the website yourself. What do I mean by this? If you get an email that invites you to go to XYZ.com website for your purchases, it could be a red flag that it might be a spam message. Always go to the site yourself.
  4. Don’t use a site that does have “https” in its web address. The “s” indicates that the site is secure. Also, look for a closed padlock on the lower right corner of the screen which indicates safety and security as well.
  5. Check out shopping sites. Shop at sites that have received good reviews from current clients. Don’t fall for offers that appear too good to be true – they usually are. Look for sites that have a Better Business Bureau designation on them. Shop from sites that provide contact phone numbers.

Common sense can make online shopping both fun and financially secure!
