Is Being Balanced a Myth?

We’ve been told over and over that we should strive for balance. Because of that when we know we’re spending more time in one area of our life, we feel guilty and beat ourselves up for not being balanced.

I would propose that there will be many times in your life when you will and should be out of balance. Here are just a few examples:

  • Family: I recently met a courageous woman who quit a great job and moved across the country to spend time with her mother who had one year left to live.
  • Community: When your favorite charity is doing a weekend-long event, your family may miss you, but you are making a real contribution.
  • Work: There will be seasons when opportunities abound and you’re working longer hours to take advantage of as many as you can.
  • Play: Allow yourself several days off on a regular basis to do something just for the fun of it. Take lots of mini-vacations.

You can be out of balance, just don’t stay there permanently. If you set a time limit on your out-of-balance times, you’ll reap the rewards of them and may even be refreshed when you get back in balance.
