Do you believe that we’re half way through 2013 already?! Unbelievable!! Remember those goals you set back at the beginning of the year? How well are you progressing with them? Have you met the goals you set out to meet? Are you on the way towards meeting them? I typically set aside a day to take a business retreat mid-year simply to check in and check up on the goals I set for the business back in January. As virtual accountants we work with our clients to make certain they are meeting their financial goals, but we also need to make certain our business is meeting the goals we set for it.

Taking time to reflect on the goals you’ve set and to re-define them if necessary is crucial to your business success. What will you do on this retreat from the day-to-day of your business operations? Here is what we do:

  • Re-examine the goals we set. Are we meeting them? If not, why not? Do they need to be refined or even re-defined to make them viable? Do they perhaps not even make sense any longer? Now that we are reaching the second half of the year, do we need to set new goals to keep us moving forward? Now could be the time to do just that.
  • Reflect on our goals. Have we honored the resolutions and goals we’ve set for our business and ourselves? Have we made any positive changes toward reaching those goals? Are there goals we’re simply struggling with? Now is the time to reflect on the reason for the struggles, if any, and perhaps chart a new course for the remainder of the year.
  • Are we holding ourselves accountable to our goals? Did we set goals that simply seem too lofty to be achieved, even though we know our business will profit if we reach them.

If you need to be held accountable for goals, find an accountability partner or mentor; someone who will prod you toward success, re-ignite your motivation for it, and provide inspiration to help you achieve it.
