There’s a saying I heard once that goes something like, “when you stop getting better you stop being good.” As a small business owner that saying rings true. In my virtual accounting business we are continually learning, changing and growing – it’s a fact of life that we need to keep up with the latest rules and regulations so that our clients receive the best service possible.

How can you take steps to continually improve? Here are some of my ideas:

  • Read trade journals in your field of expertise. Subscribe to websites and receive updates in your inbox for your field.
  • Attend a conference or tradeshow annually. Attend networking events at least weekly. When you work from a virtual office, as I do, getting out and meeting new people is always inspiring and invigorating.
  • Take courses or certifications to enhance your knowledge and your professional standing.
  • Read a wide variety of articles and books. Know at least a little bit about a lot of different things.
  • Work with a mentor or mastermind group with whom you can brainstorm new ideas or ways to address problems within your organization. A fresh perspective can make everything look different.

What steps do you take to keep yourself at the front of your business and professional field?
