Labyrinth at Spirit in the Desert

That’s what I did for 4 days early in December. I left my capable manager in charge of my business and my wonderful neighbor in charge of my home and my cats (aka “The Boys”), and I took off for 4 days of “Me” time. It was the very best thing I could do for myself and for my business.

The Spirit in the Desert in Carefree beckoned. Its quiet retreat setting was the perfect place to hide out, rest, reflect, and refresh. I had no agenda; no preconceived idea of what I would do or what I should do. I didn’t take my laptop and I turned my cell phone off. I took my Bible (of course), a few books, along with both my business journal (never touched it!) and my personal journal (wrote almost 60 pages!) and my tennies. I don’t know about you, but being out in the midst of nature sings to my soul. Whether it was hiking around the area, meditating in the Islands of Silence, or walking the labyrinth, I was outside a lot – enough to get sunburned in December!

I learned a lot about me, about life, and about what’s most important to me that weekend. Perhaps the most lasting effect was from walking the labyrinth. If you’ve never experienced a labyrinth meditation, you might consider it. The labyrinth is a sacred design. It is a unicursal; there is a single pathway leading in and out. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth is not designed to confuse or bewilder. There are no blind alleys, no tricks to it, no riddles to be solved, no dead-ends. You can’t get lost in it. It is a process of releasing, receiving, and renewing. It is both uplifting and relaxing. The peace that you find makes carrying the same burdens, responsibilities, and problems not quite so difficult. You might find there are some that you no longer need to carry. Who can share that load? How can you apply that principle to your business and your life?

Life spins faster and faster every day. Do you need to slow down? Do you need to stop?
