Picture1Did you know that when you shop local 52% of what you spend stays in your community? I was pleasantly surprised when I heard that and that’s why, as a small business owner myself, I wanted to encourage you to shop local on #SmallBusinessSaturday (which is tomorrow, November 30).

After you’ve shopped the malls or the big box stores for those big name brand items on Black Friday (if you’re brave enough!), spend time Saturday visiting the stores along the “Main Street” in your community. There are lots of new stores in my area that I’m looking forward to visiting. They are unique and I’m sure they’ll offer selections that I wouldn’t see at the mall stores. Unique is good!

Even though Small Business Saturday only comes around once a year, it is a great time to remind us to do business with local businesses whenever possible. If you have a store, throw open your doors, welcome in the shoppers, let them know who you are and what you do. Find ways to encourage them to visit you year round. I know I shop local because of the amazing customer service I receive – something that is sometimes lacking in the big box stores.

In my role as owner of a virtual accounting company, I work with small to mid-sized businesses whose owners rely on connecting with and making sales to, holiday shoppers such as yourself!

What small business will you visit this Saturday? What kind of items can you find in a Main Street store that will be unique compared to what you’d find in a mall? I’d love to hear your Small Business Saturday adventure story!
