We’ve all experienced cheering at some kind of sporting event where the crowd, at least on one side of the stadium, seemed to be moving in accord. Whether it’s “The Wave” or some other cheer, you were on the same wavelength. That’s an example of how body language works.

I noticed once, when having coffee with a friend, that the longer we talked the more we were both leaning in toward each other. Moving in, maintaining an open posture, and smiling – all these signal agreement and are positive. Moving back, crossing of arms, and looking away – these are negative signals.

How can you use body language to your advantage? When you’re meeting with someone, watch their position. If you agreed with them, mirror their posture. If they change their position, mirror the new posture. You know that you both are truly in agreement when you can change your posture and they mirror you!
