It happens to everyone. You get in a rut. You’re not sure how it happens, it just does, especially if you keep doing things the way you’ve always done them. In some areas of your business – like in my virtual accounting practice, for example – there are steps you always have to take, but in other aspects of your work life there is bound to be leeway in which you can shake things up.

Here are my top three tips for getting out of a rut:

  1.  Start small. If you look at sweeping, overall changes to a routine it will seem too daunting and chances are you don’t do anything. Take baby steps to make small changes.
  2. Incorporate fun into the workday. Whether you take time off for lunch to take a swim or host a team meeting at which you play games to foster camaraderie, fun can shake you out of your rut.
  3. Learn to say “yes.” We know we are always being told to say “no” and not take on more tasks, but there are times when a well-placed “yes” will take you to new places and open you to new opportunities.

Are you in a rut? What can you do to get out of it?
