As a business owner of a virtual accounting firm I know I need to get the most from the people who work for me – especially because we all work remotely from home. Because I take so much time and put so much thought into my hiring processes, the individuals on my team have been well-vetted before they come on board.

If you’re in the process of hiring or you are a manager in need of a quick refresher, here are my Golden Rules of Manamanagement gement:

  1. Be available for your team. If you don’t have time to talk with your team and to touch base regularly they may dread hearing from you, especially if the only time you connect with them is to remind them of deadlines or deliverables. Make time for a weekly touch base call. Notice the efforts and achievements of your staff.
  2. Know who works for you. You don’t want to spend all of your touch base phone call time engaged in niceties – hey, you have work to do, too – but it is nice to ask about the spouse and children or the pets or your employee’s health. Be interested in what interests your team. Know what motivates your staff – family, money, flexible schedule, etc. – and you’ll be better able to keep them motivated in their work for you.
  3. Bring your “A” game to every phone call and staff meeting. If you’re excited and engaged, your staff will pick up on that energy and it will trickle down to their client interactions.

Keeping your staff engaged and motivated will help to deliver great results to your clients. What do you do to make that happen?
