What Business Are You In?

Several years ago when I was rebranding my company, I called my brother who has a PhD in Marketing. When he asked me what I sold, I said, “Peace of mind.” After a pause he said he thought I was going to say accounting services, to which I replied that we hadn’t sold that it years. Accounting services are what we do, but they aren’t the business we’re in. We’re in the business of providing peace of mind for business owners that are concerned about their accounting. There is a big difference!

If you sell the outcome that your client wants you don’t have to sell, you simply have to listen and educate. Listen to what your prospects’ problems and concerns are. What are they currently doing that isn’t working for them? What is the outcome they want? If that is what you provide, you have a match made in heaven.
